A New York City man was killed in an auto accident on Route 1 in West Windsor shortly after midnight this morning.

West Windsor Police Sgt. Danny Mohr said that Gerard W. Haburay, 63, was driving north on the highway—about a half mile north of Quakerbridge Road—when he encountered debris that had fallen from a tractor trailer sometime earlier.

Haburay, who was driving a 1992 Dodge Van, drove off the road and collided with several trees. Police said it was not clear whether Haburay hit the debris or if he swerved to avoid them. Police and emergency services responded to the scene and Haburay was transported to Capitol Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

The accident is being investigated by Patrolman Frank Sabatino of the West Windsor Township Police Department’s Traffic Bureau, and detectives from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Response Team.

Any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact the Sgt. Danny Mohr or Patrolman Sabatino at (609) 799-1222.
