Emily Laermer, a senior at High School South, was named the 2007 New Jersey High School Journalist of the Year by the Garden State Scholastic Press Association. She will receive the Bernard Kilgore Memorial Scholarship of $5,”000 from the New Jersey Newspaper Foundation. Laermer was honored at the New Jersey Press Association’s editorial awards banquet recently.##M:[more]##

She began working for the Pirate’s Eye, High School’s South newspaper, when an ankle injury during her freshman year prevented being active in sports activities. A youth correspondent for the Princeton Packet, she also provides proof-reading assistance.

Laermer, who has also been entered into the national competition, will attend Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism. She is the daughter of Stuart and Caryn Laermer of West Windsor.
