Joshua Rose of West Windsor is in the family musical “Nightlights” at Passage Theater in Trenton. A fifth grader at Village Upper Elementary School, the 11-year-old plays the role of Isaac, who inspires the community to band together to combat prejudice. He played Tiny Tim in McCarter Theater’s “Christmas Carol” from 1999 to 2002, and also appeared in Princeton University’s 2001 production of “Medea” as one of the two sons.

The true events that inspired “Nightlights” took place in Billings, Montana, in 1993. A group of neo-Nazis distributed literature in the town and threw bricks through windows of homes displaying Menorahs during Chanukah. Local churches and schools took a stand against prejudice and encouraged thousands of residents to hand pictures of Menorahs in their windows. The town became noted for its desire to have people of different religions living together peacefully.

The musical was adapted by Janice Cohen based on her book “The Christmas Menorahs: How a Town Fought Hate.” Original music and lyrics are by Harvey Edelman and Neil Fishman. David L. White directs. KidsBridge presents interfaith discussions following performances.

Nightlights, Passage Theater, Mill Hill Playhouse, Front and Montgomery streets, Trenton, 609-392-0766. $10 adults; $5 children. The five performances are Friday, December 17, 7 p.m.; Saturday, December 18, 3 and 6 p.m.; and Sunday, December 19 at 3 and 6 p.m.
