High School South Choir and Orchestras will soon be experiencing the Hermitage and the Czar’s Winter Palace, a traditional Russian tea ceremony, Russian cuisine, and a chance to mingle and sing with a Russian school choir during their spring break. The 120 choir members present a silent auction, high tea, and concert featuring “The Sounds of Music” with musical excerpts from the musicals “The Sound of Music” and “Newsies”, some light jazz, solo performances, and the choir’s a cappella groups at the school on Sunday, January 28.##M:[more]##

The performing groups include the Concert Choir and Chorale, and a cappella groups First Edition (co-ed), Noteworthy (all boys), and Tickled Pink (all girls). Soloists from the choirs, dancers, and solo instrumentalists will be featured.

Choir members invite the community to help their dreams become a reality this spring when the groups travel to three cities in Russia to perform and experience a taste of Russia. St. Petersburg, Pushkin, and Novgorod are the three main stops on this culturally-rich adventure that includes musical experiences in a Russian Orthodox Church, performing in the St. Petersburg Conservatory Grand Hall with Russian ballet dancers and a Russian choir, and enjoying a performance by the 19th century-inspired Nevsky Folk Ensemble.

Items up for silent auction include one week at a four-bedroom vacation home in Hilton Head, North Carolina; a hand-painted mural or decorative wall finish for your home; an animated cell; four one-hour voice lessons; two hours of computer support; a one-hour piano performance; as well as half-hour performances by select groups within the choir.

Silent bidding and high tea take place between 2:30 and 3:45 p.m. The concert begins at 4 p.m. Admission is $15, $10 for senior citizens and students, and $5 for children under 10.

The spring trip, chaperoned by teachers and parents, is a combined trip with the orchestra. According to choir director Janice Chapin, funds raised will also benefit the Chorale, String Ensemble, and Camerata Orchestra when they compete in Boston in April.
