Consumer Reports ranked St. Francis Medical Center the fourth safest hospital in New Jersey in its May 2013 issue.

The hospital was also rated the safest hospital in Mercer County.

In its second hospital listing, Consumer Reports rated more than 2,000 U.S. hospitals in five categories; avoiding infections, avoiding readmissions, communication about medications and discharge, appropriate use of chest and abdominal scanning and avoiding serious complications.

The magazine develops the ratings from scientifically based data on patient experience and outcomes gathered from public sources. The data, which come from federal and state governments, cover different time ranges, depending on the specific measures.

President and CEO of St. Francis, Jerry Jablonowski, said he strives to provide a safe environment for the hospital’s patients.

“It is my highest priority that every person we take care of at St. Francis is treated in a safe and compassionate manner with the best health outcome possible. We provide a safe environment within the hospital, both through our technology and our staff training, which minimizes the chances of an adverse event,” Jablonowski said in a statement.
