The rivalry between the North and South hockey teams has taken on a significance beyond hockey. For each of the past five years the crosstown rivals have faced off in the David Bachner Memorial Game. The annual event honors the legacy of David Bachner, a star baseball player and 2009 graduate of High School North who died suddenly of a heart attack just weeks before he was set to begin college at Seton Hall. Proceeds from the game help allow underprivileged children to play baseball, hockey, and basketball.

Before a crowd of more than 500 at Pro Skate in South Brunswick on Saturday, January 11, South emerged victorious for the first time, defeating North, 5-2. Steven Cangelosi, Jonathan Matthews, Ben Starace, Brian Tso, and Jeremy Wong scored for the Pirates, while Tyler Birch and Nick Day netted one apiece for the Knights. South’s Andrew Holubec made 27 saves. Ruairidh Rimmer had 18.
