South Tennis Still Undefeated

Despite its youth, the South boys’ tennis team also has been virtually untouched by its opponents so far this season heading into the county tournament on Monday, April 21.##M:[more]##

With a record of 6-0, Coach Jim Giovacchini says he is anticipating major competition at the tournament from Princeton and Princeton Day School.

While he says he would have liked to see his team have more preparation heading into the tournament — with a rain out and two cancellations already this season — he says the newcomers in his lineup have been doing quite well so far. It also helps that Demetri Vhranos returned to the first doubles lineup on April 9. “He’s not 100 percent, but he’s doing okay, and he’s playing for us. It definitely strengthens the team.”

In addition to Princeton and Princeton Day School, the Pirates could face district rival North in the county tournaments, followed by the teams’ first meet against each other, scheduled for Monday, April 28.

Giovacchini says that the match should be a good one, with the Knights coming off a 6-1 record, with their first loss — and a close one — to state powerhouse Princeton, 3-2, on April 16.

“It just seems like the season really hasn’t started yet,” Giovacchini says. “We’re really untested so far with our limited schedule. The counties, the state, and all the bigger regular season matches are ahead of us. We’re anxious to get started with that. It’s going to be very busy.”
