Shoeless Joe Steps Up in South’s ‘Damn Yankees’

The musical, “Damn Yankees,” comes to High School South on Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6, at 8 p.m., when the familiar characters of Lola, Joe, Meg, and Applegate bring “Heart” to the West Windsor stage. This is the third revival performed at High School South and the third time that teacher Tom Stewart is playing the part of Joe Boyd, the middle-aged baseball fan who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a chance to play for the Washington Senators.

Tickets are $10. For information, call 609-716-5050. Seniors, scouts, and youths are invited to the preview performance on Thursday, March 4, begins at 5 p.m. A $3 donation to the school’s musical program is invited. Sandwiches and snacks will be sold during intermission.

Based on Douglas Wallop’s “The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant,” the musical opened on Broadway in 1956 and played for 1,”019 performances, with the revival opening in 1994. The High School cast includes Stephanie Adamo, Mitchell Akselrad, Jon Amira, Emily Bostrom, Evan Carlstrom, Gabby Dall-Asta, Clayton DeSouza, Charu Dhavahikar, Jonathan Drum, and Rose Dzugan. Also Sarah Esmi, Marissa Farrand, Melanie Fernandez, Tim Forester, Amanda Fox, Jessica Fox, Kevin Fuller, Bryan Garcia, Robert Gati, Alyssa Gentile, Brooke Hardy, Ashley Hencken, Zach Howes, and Alexa Hoyne.

The show is directed by Demi Ashton, produced by samara berger, choreographed by Marilyn Stoddard, and vocal directed by Janice Chapin. Rachel Weizman is stage manager, and Alex Zuckerman is assistant stage manager. Pat Riley is the costume designer. Steven Karasik is in charge of lighting and Sara Neufed is handling the props.
