Community Middle School Science Olympiad Team took first place in the Central Regional Competition. The team will now face other regional winners in the state finals in May.##M:[more]##

Last May, the Community Middle School Science Olympiad Team claimed the state championship in the New Jersey Science Olympiad Championship for the fourth straight year. In winning the state title, the CMS Team took first place gold in 16 of 25 events. There were also medals given for two second places, one third, one fourth, one fifth, one sixth, and one seventh place.

Coaches include school principal Arthur Downs, Wanda Rinker, and Mort Levine. Joe Benci, Denise Weber, Virginia Baner, and Parris Lattanzio assisted them.

In addition, the High School South Science Olympiad Team took first place in the New Jersey Central Regional Science Olympiad Competition. The team, which beat out 20 other high schools, will now face other regional winners in the state finals in March. The team coaches include Meenakshi Bhattacharya, Brendan Field, and Sunila Sharma.

First place awards were earned in the following: Astronomy, Bohua Zhan and David Ku; Dynamic Planet, Warren Cai and Charu Dhavalikar; Fermi Questions, Bohua Zahn and Ying-Ying Tran; Rocks and Minerals, Lily Yu and Jerrald Chen; and Wright Stuff, Richard Lu and Liz Liu.

Second place awards were received for Robot Ramble, Richard Lu and David Liu; and Picture This, Lily Lu, Charu Dhavalikar, and Andre Vasquez. Third place awards for Disease Detectives, Daphne Ezer and Manu Venkataswaran; and Tower Building, Manu Vankataswaran and Liz Liu.

Other awards include Chemistry Lab, Jerrald Chen and Warren Cai; Designer Genes, Ying-Ying Tran and Daphne Ezer; Ecology, Sumona Bhattacharya and David Ku; Food Science, Sumona Bhattacharya and Sofia Izmailov; Forensics, Sofia Izmailov and Jerrald Chen; and Physics Lab, Vicky Liu and Jerrald Chen.

The team will face other regional winners in the state finals in March.
