Princeton Public Library is set to host a “readathon” in honor of Adult Literacy Awareness Month in September.

The event is sponsored by Literacy New Jersey/Mercer County Programs, an organization dedicated to helping the 60,000 adults in Mercer County who cannot read at a fifth grade level improve their skills through individual tutoring and conversation classes.

Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert, community leaders and members of the Literacy NJ community are set to read a brief selection from their favorite book from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 4 at the library. Children’s books are featured in the first hour.

Readathon is designed to expose Literacy NJ students to a range of different books and topics.

The public is welcome to participate; to sign up, email sbharda@literacynj.org or call (609) 587-6027.

Refreshments will be served and discount coupons will be made available from local bookstores.

Literacy NJ, Mercer County recruits, trains and supports a network of tutors who provide confidential, quality instruction to Mercer County adults. The organization provides a broad menu of services, including one-on-one, small and large group tutoring, computer and conversation classes for Adult Basic Education and English for Speakers of Other Languages to more than 500 adults in Mercer County.
