Elizabeth Bondurant, who has served as a lieutenant in the Plainsboro Police Department since 1994, has been named the new captain of the police department.

Bondurant replaces long-time Captain Timothy Matheny, who retired at the end of February. With the recent hiring of Clifford Maurer as the civilian Public Safety Director to head the department, Bondurant will be the highest-ranked unformed officer.

“Liz Bondurant has been an important member of the police administration for the past 10 years, and has been a key opinion leader of the department,” says Maurer. “Her dedication, commitment to excellence and innovative police techniques will be invaluable to the department as we face future challenges. I look forward to working with her.”

Bondurant holds a master’s degree in Criminal Justice Management and is a New Jersey Certified Public Manager for law enforcement. She attended the FBI National Academy in Quantico, and has been the coordinator of the Domestic Violence team and the Department Liaison with the County Prosecutor’s Office. Bondurant is an instructor at the state Regional Community Policing Institute, and an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Mercer County Community College.

Bondurant started the first Domestic Violence Response Team for the township, and also created the Annual Law Enforcement Expo held at the Quakerbridge Mall, where police departments from the area give local residents the opportunity to see demonstrations on DWI issues, have free child photo IDs and fingerprints taken, and tour police cars. She will be officially sworn in on April 14.

“Plainsboro’s new police Captain has established a commendable record during her years of service, including 10 years as Lieutenant — a key component of the Police Department’s management team. The promotion recognizes her skills, and will assist in building on our Department’s history of excellence,” says Deputy Mayor Neil Lewis, liaison for public safety.

“Captain Bondurant has served the Police Department and the community with distinction for 20 years, displaying the highest standards of professionalism and leadership,” says Robert Sheehan, Township Administrator. “With the hiring of Cliff Maurer as our new Director of Public Safety, and the promotion of Liz Bondurant to Captain, the Department is in very good hands.”
