Alex Yang, a senior at High School North, is a team member of the winning team in the United States Mathematics National Championship. Yang’s team, which also included Zhou Fan from Parsippany, New Jersey, and students from Ohio, Louisiana, and California, scored a perfect score of 101, the first perfect score in the history of the iTest, also known as the American High School Internet Mathematics Competition. ##M:[more]##

Yang met Fan, the team captain, when they were on the same MathCounts team in eighth grade. With its members scattered across the country, the winning team, known as “The Dominators,” relied on instant messaging software and E-mails to claim the championship. The test took place from September 16 to 20 and was free to students and schools. More than 31,”000 students from hundreds of schools participated. The winning team receives iPod Nanos and iPod accessories.

Yang is the son of Helen Fan and Liyou Yang. He is co-president of North’s math club, tutors math, and teaches math at the Plainsboro Chinese School. “He has been interested in math since he was five years old,” says his mother. But, she adds, “he has not yet declared math as his major in college.”
