Portrait of Robert Field Stockton by Micah Williams.

Morven Museum and Garden is set to display paintings by New Jersey artist Micah Williams.

Micah Williams: Portrait Artist is set to run April to Sept. 14 at the museum, 55 Stockton St., Princeton.

Traveling portrait artist Williams (1782-1837) was a prolific artist who has 272 known existing works. His works are represented in many major museums and are highly sought after by folk art collectors.

This is the first exhibition dedicated solely to the work of Williams. The exhibition is on loan to Morven from the Monmouth County Historical Association.

With more than 40 portraits on view, visitors come face-to-face with the state’s 19th century farmers, orchard growers, militia officers, politicians, silversmiths, potters, carpenters, and their families.

The exhibition will also debut Morven’s newest acquisition, a pastel portrait of Commodore Robert Field Stockton completed by Micah Williams around 1821. Stockton was a third-generation resident of Morven, head the Pacific Fleet and a U.S. Senator.

An opening reception is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 10. This reception is free and open to the public.

Morven is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
