Pennington Players are bringing “Violet,” a musical story about the growth and enlightenment of a young woman scarred by a childhood accident, to the stage of Kelsey Theater. Performances are weekends, Friday, November 6, to Sunday, November 15. A reception with the cast and crew follows the performance on November 6.

The musical, set in 1964, focuses on Violet, who was struck by an axe as a young girl. She has saved money and hopes for a miracle from an televangelist to heal the visible scar across her face and make her beautiful. Shannon Doyle of Kendall Park plays the role of Violet Karl. Unschooled, her father taught her arithmetic through the art of draw poker.

Actors also include Kyrus Keenan Westcott, a former resident of Plainsboro, as Flick; and Ben Menahem of Plainsboro as Monty. In the south of 1964, Violet finds a kinship with Flick, an African American, who, like her, is immediately judged by strangers because of his appearance.

Frank Ferrara of West Windsor is directing the production and his wife, Shannon Ferrara, is the musical director. A band director in the WW-P School District since 2000, she currently teaches at Grover Middle School. She also performs with Eastern Wind Symphony, Garden State Symphonic Band, and in other regional ensembles.

Violet, Kelsey Theater, Mercer Community College, 1200 Old Trenton Road, West Windsor. Weekends, November 6 to 15. $20. 609-570-3333. www.kelseytheatre.net.
