Libraries are no longer just for books. There are audio and virtual books, DVDs, and much more. The West Windsor branch presented 157 programs attended by 1,929 people in 2013. “West Windsor is a very library-oriented community and last year we had 433,489 visitors,” says Rina Banerjee, director of the library. “These numbers include patrons who came to borrow library materials and also to attend the various free programs that the library offers.”

Among the more popular programs have been those related to health. “The health related programs have been popular,” says Banerjee. “We have offered stress management workshops, GERD and Alzheimer’s seminars, and memory screenings.” Upcoming health talks include:

Stroke is An Emergency: Act FAST, Monday, August 11, 2 p.m. Discover what you can do to lower your risk for stroke at the program led by Nicole A. Kuczinski, RN, Stroke Coordinator with University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro. Learn the early warning signs of a stroke, when to seek care if symptoms appear, prevention pointers, and other important considerations.

Understanding the Nutrition Facts Food Label, Wednesday, August 13, 1:30 p.m. Workshop to help you look past the deceptive and confusing claims on food packages presented by Verna Dentino. Using the recommendations made by the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association regarding calories, fat, sodium, and sugars, Dentino will show you how to apply these numbers to your personal situation every time you shop.

ABCs of DNA, Tuesday, August 19, 7 p.m. An introduction to genetic genealogy and personal genomics presented by Walter Choroszewski, a former science educator. Choroszewski shares his experiences with DNA testing and teaches you how You can discover the hidden treasures within your DNA, helps decode the confusing terminology and translates it into common language, and compares genetic testing companies to find your genetic relative, bio-geographical origins, and more.
