Half post-office, half municipal offices?

As Council heard how the township continues its negotiations with USPS for a five-year extension of the post office lease, West Windsor Business Administrator Robert Hary laid out some potential plans for the building. The picture may still shift as a lease has not yet been settled, but at Council’s March 12 meeting Hary explained a possible layout change, should there be a reduced USPS operation.

The right side of the lobby would probably remain as the post office operation while the left side of the building will be modified to accommodate township personnel, particularly those who occupy the trailer attached to the municipal building.

“Departments such as human services or health and recreation would move over to the post office area, along with our emergency services as well,” Hary said.

Hary confirmed that the plans would likely include separate entrances for the post office facility and the municipal offices.

“I think that makes the most sense. The way the post office is set up now they not only have their front counter and meters, they have the P.O. boxes located in the vestibule to the side. It makes sense to leave that intact. If you go in there now you’ll see a lot of open space — the part on the left was in use before, when it was more of a working post office,” he said.
