Celebrate putting the garden back in the Garden State when D&R Greenway Land Trust hosts a program in which three farmers share stories about farming in the region. “Our Land, Our Food” will be held at the Johnson Education Center, 1 Preservation Place, Princeton, on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 6:30 p.m.

Gary Mount, co-owner of Terhune Orchards in Lawrenceville, will tell his story about the generations of farmers in his family and also his early efforts to preserve farmland in New Jersey.

The second speaker, John Lima, of Lima Family Farms in Hillsborough, raises all his chickens, cows, pigs and sheep on a predominately pastured diet. He will describe how and why he decided on this method of farming and the challenges and benefits of his choice.

D&R Greenway Vice-President Jay Watson will talk about the path to creating urban food-producing gardens and, specifically, how the Capital City Farm in Trenton was established with D&R Greenway’s leadership.

“Our partnership with farms is critical,” D&R Greenway President & CEO Linda Mead said. “By preserving nearly 20,000 acres in the midst of the Garden State, we are not only creating scenic vistas and places for outdoor recreation, but fertile soil where wholesome food can be raised. The habitats we restore with native plants assures the presence of pollinators for farms.”
