Dining For Water

In the world’s poorest nations, water-borne diseases kill 5,”000 children a day. Grover Middle School sixth graders are planning two fundraising events to help people in rural Africa with clean drinking water.

The first fundraiser will take place on Sunday, February 11, at Desert Moon Fresh Mexican Grille, 415 Nassau Park Plaza, West Windsor. Patrons may dine between 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the restaurant will donate 15 percent of the bill to the cause. (Diners should mention that they are there on behalf of the Grover fundraiser). Krishnan S. Narayanan, the owner of Desert Moon, is a West Windsor resident.##M:[more]##

“The students have been thinking about the issue of clean water, and how often Americans take it for granted,” says sixth grade teacher Kimberly Reynolds. “They discovered that many of the world’s countries don’t have access to clean water, and as a result thousands a year die, (mostly children) from diseases such as cholera.”

With the help of Reynolds and Virginia Macaluso, another sixth grade teacher, the concerned students decided to begin a service project entitled P.A.W.S. (Purifying Africa’s Water Supply) to raise awareness for the issue.

The second event, “Make Things Fair,” will take place on Thursday, March 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grover Middle School. Participants may dine on typical fair foods including soft pretzels, lemonade, churros, popcorn, and an ice cream bar, while perusing various informational stands and marketplace booths. General admission is $2. All proceeds will be donated to UNICEF for the purchase of water filtration systems for the people of Uganda. For more information or to offer support, contact Ginny Macaluso at Virginia.Macaluso@ww-p.org or Kimberly Reynolds at Kimberly.Reynolds@ww-p.org.
