Black Scholarship Semifinalists

Three area high school seniors were named national semifinalists in the 2007 National Achievement Scholarship Program. Matthew J. Howard of High School South, and Aaron Ennis and Christine Wilkinson of High School North are among the more than 1,”600 black American high school seniors designated semifinalists in the 43rd annual competition.##M:[more]##

The scholastically talented students have the opportunity to continue in the competition for close to 800 achievement scholarship awards, worth more than $2.5 million. The program, conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, was initiated in 1964 to honor academically promising black youth throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants.

More than 130,”000 high school juniors from all parts of the United States requested consideration in the 2007 program when they took the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists were designated within geographic regions and are the highest scoring program entrants in the states that make up each region.

To advance to the finalist level, semifinalists must present a record of high achievement performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, earn SAT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance, and complete an application.
