Members of the Plainsboro Township Committee awarded a bid on May 11 for the second phase of a bicycle path improvement project.

When Plainsboro advertised bids for the project, 11 bid packets were distributed to vendors. On March 3, the day of the bid opening, five bids were submitted.

Halecon Inc., of Bridgewater, was the lowest responsible bidder at a price of $274,948.90.

According to documents, the township’s 2009 capital budget includes funding for the project, which will consist of constructing a new bike path on Plainsboro Road from Maple Avenue to Prospect Avenue.

Part of the funding for the project includes two Middlesex County grants, for a total of $160,000, and one NJ Department of Transportation grant of $269,000.

“It’s a continuation of the bike paths from the railroad bridge in Plainsboro down to Prospect,” said Plainsboro Mayor Peter Cantu. “It’s an improvement that’s long overdue.”

Cantu said that the project is one that the township has “been chasing for a long time,” and that he is pleased the township will be able to continue its program to provide pedestrian and bicycle access to the community.
