Annual Gift Show

Marie Nesci and Lisa Pappa have taken an alternate approach to fund raising for High School South’s Class of 2014 Post Prom event. The party provides a safe, alcohol, and drug-free extravaganza from midnight until 6 a.m. on high school premises after the actual formal event concludes. Traditionally, parents work the class’s entire senior year to raise funds for the event but this class has been fundraising for several years.

Nesci and Pappa, who both have daughters in the Class of 2014, formed the Spirit Club in their freshman year — and have been slowly raising funds since. The organization has sponsored fundraising, and spirit-building events such as haunted hayrides, T-shirt design contests, and bake sales. They also have presented community service opportunities for the students by participating in the school’s annual flea market and raking leaves at the homes of senior citizens in the community.

“The idea for the gift show evolved through feedback from the shoppers at the craft show over the years,” says Pappa. Sherri Bailey, budget secretary for High School South and the person responsible for the craft show for more than 25 years, approached Nesci and Pappa with the concept for the gift show last year.

Under the direction of Bailey, Nesci and Pappa compiled more than 100 vendors, crafters, and artisans selling unique merchandise last year. “This year’s show has expanded by 50 percent to fill the entire footprint of the school and will include jewelry, fashion apparel, accessories, handbags, florals, candles, aromatherapy, holiday decor, cosmetics, specialty food, cutlery, kitchen necessities, and much more,” says Papa. “Get a jump start on your holiday shopping.”
