While High School North celebrated its first win, a day earlier their crosstown rivals at High School South had gone down to defeat for the first time this season in an upset 27-24 loss to Allentown.

For Allentown, now 5-2, it was the second straight victory over an unbeaten team. In its previous game, Allentown beat West Jersey League division leader New Egypt in another close game, 31-28.

South’s loss was cemented when Allentown intercepted an overthrown pass by quarterback Chris Evans in the back of the end zone with only 44 seconds left in the game. The loss dropped South to 7-1.

Pirates’ running back Brian Schoenauer began the scoring with a 68-yard TD run on the first play, but Allentown responded immediately with a 35-yard touchdown pass. The Pirates took a 12-7 lead when Austin Gioseffi went 54 yards down the sideline 6:45 into the game.

Allentown then scored twice, making the score 20-12, until Schoenauer scored on a 75-yard run 4:20 before halftime to get the Pirates within two — 20-18.

In the third quarter, Schoenauer gave the Pirates a lead with his third score of the game — a 1-yard touchdown.

Allentown responded with a 14-play, 75-yard drive to get the winning points, a drive kept alive with two fourth-down conversions.

Schoenauer ran for a total of 260 yard and three touchdowns in the game, but was limited to only 56 yards in the second half by Allentown’s defense.
