The winter session of performance workshops for children and teens presented by Kelsey Theater begins Saturday, January 13. With the addition this past fall of “Tomato Patch On-Screen and Off-Screen,” the theater now offers opportunities for young people from kindergarten through high school to explore the performing arts under the guidance of professionally trained theater educators. All classes are held on Mercer College’s West Windsor campus.##M:[more]##

“Kelsey Kids Playshops” will be held for 10 sessions from January 13 through March 17 under the supervision of Jean Prall Rosolino, a specialist in youth theater. Offered in collaboration with Youth Stages, workshops are offered in two sessions. Kindergartners through second graders meet from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. for “PLAYtime,” a series of classes that gives younger children an opportunity to express themselves through movement, language, and pantomime. “PLAYing Around with Theater,” for third through fifth graders, meets from 10:45 a.m. to noon, and encourages children to assume characters and work cooperatively to create improvisational scenes. A sharing with family and friends will take place on Saturday, March 17. The cost is $175.

“Tomato Patch On-Screen and Off-Screen” also runs from January 13 through March 17, coordinated by Tracy Antozzeski, a theater production consultant, and Doug Edelson, an actor and producer for stage, film, and television. Presented by Graffiti Productions, classes are held from 9 a.m. to noon.

Students from 7th to 12th grade will learn acting techniques and terminology for stage, television, commercials, and film. The final class on March 17 includes a screening of participants’ work filmed during the 10-week session. Each student will receive a DVD copy of the film. Instructors include professional actor Dan Spalluto, who has directed Tomato Patch’s summer master class for high school students, and Jesse Swanson, a Tomato Patch staff member and graduate of High School South, pursuing a degree in applied theater arts at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. The cost is $300.

Class sizes are limited and the placement of sixth graders in either the younger or older classes will be based on level of acting knowledge and experience. For registration information, call 609-570-3566, E-mail projects@mccc.edu, or visit www.kelseytheatre.net.
