Roadwork associated with the Alexander Road s-curve realignment has temporary stopped for Memorial Day weekend, and work will remain suspended until Tuesday, May 31.

However, beginning Wednesday, June 1, there will be a four-week full closure on Alexander Road between Canal Pointe Boulevard and Canal Road, with a 24-hour detour. “During this time, traffic will be detoured using Route 1 to Washington Road to Faculty Road,” said a township alert. “The full detour is required in order to perform deep utility work and full road bed reconstruction.”

After Sunday, June 26, there will be partial lane closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. until the end of the project.

Local residences and existing businesses, including Obal Garden Market, will remain accessible during the project, officials said.

Leading up to the road closures, crews from the Lucas Construction Group were removing trees on the corner of the curve and grading the corner to improve the sight line and allow the curvature of the road to be changed, said Pat Ward, the township’s director of community development. They also installed the sidewalk, she said.

The project includes widening the road to 38 feet, with one lane of travel and a five-foot bike path in each direction. Features of the new road include elevation of the roadway to create a banking effect, use of high friction pavement, and improved striping and signage.

Ward said officials anticipate the project to be completed in mid-July, barring unforeseen work that comes up during construction and deep utility work and weather delays.
