Amazon.com announced today it will open a new, 1 million-square-foot facility in Robbinsville in early 2014.
According to a news release, the new distribution center in the Matrix Business Park will create an estimated 700 jobs and generate $22.1 million in tax revenues for Robbinsville, its schools and Mercer County.
“I’m thrilled,” Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried said. “This was a process that took a long time and involved a lot of people. I’m proud of our staff. Just about every town in New Jersey was trying to get this rateable.”
He added the warehouse could bring $1.3 million to Robbinsville this year, going a long way to stabilizing taxes in a township where the burden has been overwhelmingly on residents.
At the facility, Amazon employees will pick, pack and ship smaller items to customers, items like books and DVDs. A news release said Amazon fulfillment center jobs pay on average 30 percent more than traditional retail jobs.
KTR Capital Partners, a private equity firm, is building the project with Amazon planning to take occupancy in early 2014. The expected investment in the project will exceed $200 million.
