Omar Sosa to perform at McCarter

The Princeton University Program in Jazz Studies and McCarter Theatre are set to present the Afro-Cuban composer/pianist Omar Sosa in concert at the Berlind Theatre on April 26 at 8 p.m.

Sosa was born in Cuba and began studying percussion and marimba at age eight. As a teenager, he started studying piano at Escuela Nacional de Música and continued his education at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana.

Among his influences are traditional Afro-Cuban music, European classical composers including Chopin, Bartok and Satie, Monk, Coltrane, Parker, Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Chucho Valdés and the Cuban jazz group Irakere.

In 2003 Sosa received the Afro-Caribbean Jazz Album of the Year Award from the Jazz Journalists Association in New York City.

Sosa will also be in residence at Princeton and will be working with students in the Jazz Program on April 23 and 24.

Tickets are $50.

The Berind Theatre is located at McCarter Theatre center at 91 University Place, Princeton.
