Reporting on Race

I passed through West Windsor, the town of my youth 30 years ago, and read your paper at Aljohn’s. I found your article and reporting on A&E (accelerated & enriched) curriculum elimination racist. Had a sports program been facing elimination, would you count how many parents of a certain race came out to protest that? You did feel the need to say, “During the public commenting period, more than a dozen Asian parents expressed support for the current A&E program and voiced concern about the district’s elimination recommendation…”

You also reported on exactly how many Asians are in these advanced classes and their percentages. I cannot imagine a paper doing such math about the number of races or religions involved in other classes or activities like sports, music, debate, student government, drama, or choir or French class.

Editor’s Note: The statistics on the races and genders of A&E students were tabulated by WW-P administrators and were included in Assistant Superintendent Martin Smith’s presentation in support of eliminating the program at the September 8 board meeting.
