For School Board: Scott Powell

Share post:

I have known Scott Powell for a long time. We commuted to work together on the train for several years. Scott is one of the most independent people I have ever met. He forms his own opinions and doesn’t simply go along to get along. Scott has what it takes to be a board member and do the job well.

In these difficult times one must also have the financial skills necessary to look beneath the numbers and find efficiencies and synergies that others have overlooked. In this regard Scott is uniquely qualified. With both an engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon and an MBA from the University of Southern California, Scott has the academic background to do this job. He is also a highly skilled professional in the pension industry with the math skills to challenge the numbers when they need to be challenged.

Scott Powell is the candidate who has what it takes to raise this district to new heights in academic excellence. As the son of a teacher, Scott learned upfront the challenges teachers face in connecting with students and getting them to reach their full potential. Scott also has the people skills necessary to find common ground with his fellow board members and build consensus to reach successful resolutions.

The WW-P school district needs to develop a culture of teacher excellence.

When I first started my campaign for the school board, I thought the district’s first priority should be to adopt technology faster. But as I conducted research on student performance over the last few months, I learned that teachers make the biggest impact in student achievement. Two factors contribute to teacher excellence: evaluations and culture. New Jersey has already legislated teacher evaluations into law. Now we need to develop a culture of teacher excellence.

If the voters of West Windsor elect me, my priority will be to develop and promote a school system with high-performing teachers. To provide our students with the best education possible, we need the best teachers. This requires us to attract the best teachers. To achieve this, we need to show teachers that they are valued members of our community.

I have posted many links to podcasts and documents on my web page explaining the importance of teachers. I also welcome your input and feedback. To learn more visit scottpowellblog.wordpress.com.
