The Mercer County Wildlife Center is seeking individuals who would like to volunteer their time to care for animals brought to the Hopewell Township facility.

The center’s staff and volunteers care for native wildlife that are injured, ill or displaced and provide medical treatment and a temporary refuge to prepare the animals for release into an appropriate wild habitat. The center is open 365 days a year.

In 2014 the center accepted and treated 2,200 bird, mammals and reptiles.

The Wildlife Center has scheduled volunteer orientation sessions from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, March 22 and Saturday, March 28 at the center, located on Route 209. No other sessions will be offered this year.

Volunteers must be at least 18 and have a current tetanus vaccination. The center requires that volunteers make a commitment to a regular, once a week, four-hour shift from May through September. The commitment is necessary because of the feeding schedule requirements and housing demands of the animals.

To register for an orientation contact Jane Rakos-Yates at jrakosyates@mercercounty.org or (609) 303-0552 x103 by March 15.
