John Eason, a Ewing resident who specializes in images from popular culture, or “fan art,” is the featured artist at Ewing Town Hall for the month of October.
The exhibition of Eason’s works is part of a program sponsored by the Ewing Art Commission and Art Has No Boundaries to showcase art by local artists at the township municipal building. The program started in September.
Eason’s works are mostly drawn using high-quality colored pencils.
“John’s technique of color and blending lead you to thinking his work is painted,” said Ewing Art Commission member Lauren Weber.
Some of Eason’s works include Darth Vader, Mickey Mouse and the Grinch, among others. His art tends to include his own artistic spin. For example, in one of his works he depicts the video game character Mario in a Captain America outfit, and in another he shows Mickey Mouse with a Batman reference.
“I think that is what makes John’s fan art interesting, and more than just a rendering of iconic characters,” Weber said. “His highly advanced use of colored pencils pared with his unique take on popular culture characters leads his art to be admired by children and adults combined.”
Eason, 22, spent most of his childhood living in Queens and Brooklyn, New York. He is a primarily self-taught artist who was home schooled after 4th grade until he graduated high school.
Eason attended Jamaica Center for the Arts in Queens, where he was able to take art classes while still attending school at home.
After high school he earned an associate’s degree Delaware College of Design, and plans to apply to Pratt Institute or Montclair State University for the Spring 2017 semester to continue developing his illustration career and hopefully get his work published.
