Merkin, 18, lived in Perrineville until the family moved to West Windsor 10 years ago. He is the son of Fred and Dori Merkin. His brothers are Daniel, 17, a student at Stormridge Ranch in Utah; and Alex, 14, a rising freshman at High School South.

His project included the landscaping of trees and flower beds at the newly extended parking lot of Zaitz Park on Southfield Road. The project required over 240 hours of work and the help of more than 30 dedicated volunteers.

Merkin is heading to Northeastern University in the fall where he will pursue a degree in the field of biology, with the hopes of becoming a medical care practitioner.
