The township has found new animal service providers after a cost saving deal with the now defunct Helmetta Regional Animal Shelter proved too good to be true.

At the February 11 Township Committee meeting, Plainsboro approved shared services with East Windsor’s animal control officer at a projected cost of $16,370. Agreements for veterinary and shelter services were also made with Weber’s, Nassau Animal Hospital, and Princeton Animal Hospital.

“Based on our past activity levels, the cost is not appreciably any different,” township administrator Bob Sheehan says.

Helmetta charged $16,000 for animal control services and sheltering, but the facility was closed and quarantined in November and the shelter director has since been charged with animal cruelty. Plainsboro previously paid more than $60,000 a year for shared services with West Windsor before switching to Helmetta in 2010.

Two salary ordinances were introduced for senior non-union employees and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) bargaining unit.

According to Sheehan, the two ordinances reflect two percent annual salary increases for 2014 to 2016. The ordinances list salary ranges for both groups, and Sheehan says the minimum figures are outdated and actual salaries are much closer to the maximum salary range.
