Jim Baxter, of Baxter Construction in Hopewell, recently earned the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation, identifying him as a builder with the skills and knowledge necessary to remodel or modify a home to meet the needs of the older population, disabled owners or their visitors.

“I look forward to helping homeowners in the community make the changes they need to enable them to live in their homes for a long, long time,” said Baxter. “People might not be familiar with the concept of Aging in Place and my goal is to educate them. Aging in Place is about adapting ones home to meet changing needs. The design and products for Aging in Place can be just as beautiful as products and design people are used to seeing in ‘regular’ homes.”

In three days of coursework, the CAPS curriculum incorporates market demographics, communication techniques, marketing, common barriers and solutions, building codes and standards, product ideas and resources and business management.

CAPS program graduates are required to maintain their designation by attending continuing education programs and/or participating in community service projects.
