Mercer Rowing Club brings home gold from Saratoga Invitational Regatta

West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South student Sean Kelly won silver in the men’s varsity 8 event and gold in the coxless pair event at the Saratoga Invitational Regatta April 25-27.

Princeton National Rowing Association’s Mercer Rowing Club traveled to New York to participate in the Saratoga Invitational Regatta on April 25 to 27.

The team competed against more than 40 other clubs of high-school-aged rowers from New England and Mid-Atlantic. Mercer finished in the top three boats in 25 of the 31 races.

Some highlights of the regatta for Mercer included gold medals in the men’s and women’s varsity coxless pairs, a gold medal in the women’s lightweight varsity 4 with coxswain, and a silver medal in the men’s varsity 8 with coxswain.

“Each year the expectations are higher for Mercer’s performance at Saratoga, and this year we exceeded those expectations with a team that has dedication and depth,” said men’s varsity team captain, senior, Sean Kelly (West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South). “In addition to our seniors, we got it done with a lot of great younger rowers who have trained hard and were awesome this weekend.” Kelly rowed in

The men’s varsity 8 team won a silver medal. The team includes Aaron Goodman, Tom Walker, Elias Abilheira, Alex Levine (Princeton High School), coxswain Matt Perez (Robbinsville High School), Kevin Borup (South Brunswick High School) and captain Sean Kelly, Finn Ludwig, Dan Gleim (West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South).

Kelly and Walker won gold in the men’s varsity coxless pair event.

Kate Hickey (Notre Dame High School) and Rena White (Princeton High School) won gold in the women’s varsity coxless pair event.

The gold medal boat in the women’s varsity lightweight 4 with coxswain consisted of Hickey, White, Caitin Cleary and and coxswain Katarina Stough (Princeton High School) and Katie Sessa (Mt. St. Mary Academy).

Mercer’s next competition is USRowing’s Mid-Atlantic District Junior Championships scheduled for May 10 to 11 at Mercer Lake, Mercer County Park, West Windsor
