Hamilton Township resident Maureen Kubisz won a blue ribbon for her sewing project in the home arts competition at the Burlington County Fair.
Kubiz is one of hundreds of New Jersey residents converged at the Burlington County Fairgrounds the third week in July to demonstrate their domestic excellence.
Locals were encouraged to bring their finest creations – both artistic and culinary – for this annual event. Home Arts contestants displayed quilts, cross stitch samplers, hand made clothing, and embroideries.
The judges evaluated entries based on the skill level needed to complete the project, as well as the quality of execution, and appropriateness of design/materials.
The judges awarded Kubisz, a member of the American Sewing Guild Princeton Chapter, a blue first place ribbon for a wall hanging she stitched.
Her creation, designed by Anita Good Design, combines machine embroidery, machine applique, and machine quilting to create a detailed thread painting of a quaint church. It is scheduled to be displayed in the lobby of the Hamilton Public Library in November.
She also placed with a different wall hanging at last year’s Mercer County Fair.
The American Sewing Guild is a non-profit organization whose goals include promoting home sewing, and improving the skills of their members. Members enjoy social and educational events, and create custom sewn items as requested by charities. There are more than 200 active members in Kubisz’s chapter.
