One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the gift of a first-rate education, an education that stimulates and nurtures the heart, mind, and soul, and an education that prepares children to greet the world as moral, caring human beings. It is arguably true that there has never been a time when education is more important for our children’s future.

The 21st century demands that children develop skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration, adaptability, initiative, and written and oral communication. Chapin’s academic and extracurricular programs seek to nurture these skills.

Chapin School has two great goals for its students. First, we believe the school is a place to learn about being a good student. We have high academic expectations for our students, and they rise to the challenge in an atmosphere of warmth and caring. Chapin’s comfortable, safe environment encourages them to ask questions, take risks, and to make the mistakes necessary for learning to take place.

Our academic program is demanding, and we know it works. We have a proven track record of success in secondary school placement, and, even more importantly, we know our students excel in high school both academically and as engaged members of their school communities.

We also believe that school is a good place to learn about being a good person. Chapin has made a clear and strong commitment to working with parents to instill in our students the virtues of good character — Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Kindness, and Perseverance. Whether it is in a class, on the playing field, in a science lab, or in a literature study, we look for teachable moments to help our students understand that “Character isn’t inherited. One builds it daily by the way one thinks and acts, thought by thought, action by action.” (Helen G. Douglas)

In the end, our success as a school is built upon a firm foundation of relationships — warm, giving, caring relationships. This is what Chapin is all about.
