Senator Shirley K. Turner announced July 9 that the townships of Lawrence and West Windsor and the city of Trenton have been awarded Safe Corridor grants to help fund safety initiatives along the Route 1.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation Safe Corridor grant program targets resources to the state’s highways with a “history of high crash rates.”

Safe Corridor grants are allocated based on crash data, with higher amounts of funding going to areas demonstrating the greatest need for continued enhanced enforcement measures. The grants are supported by fines which are doubled in designated Safe Corridors for a variety of moving violations, including speeding.

Lawrence Township has been awarded $52,173.91 for safety initiatives on Route 1. West Windsor Township and the city of Trenton are set to receive $42,770.48 and $37,917.09, respectively for safety improvements.

Money from the grants can be used by municipalities to purchase enforcement equipment including police vehicles, radar equipment, computer hardware and software, and salaries and overtime for enhanced enforcement.

“Through this grant money, we can support local law enforcement without burdening local taxpayers,” Turner said in a statement.
