Snow Service Extended

As the cooler fall weather comes in, winter is just around the corner. Snowfall totals in recent years have caused the township to count on an independent contracting company to keep the roads plowed cleanly.

On Monday, October 3, town council approved a one-year contract extension for snow removal services with Scheidler Excavating Company of Hightstown. The contract amount is for $80,000 and will run from November 1 of this year until October 31, 2012.

Council member Diane Ciccone, who said West Windsor has developed a good reputation for maintaining road conditions during inclement weather, questioned Business Administrator Robert Hary on the usage and effectiveness of the snow removal service. Hary responded that the past two winters have taught preparedness to the township, and Scheidler’s service goes a long way.

“Public works does handle all of our snow removal unless it gets to be a storm that they cannot control. At that point they call on Scheidler, and he bills per hour for the time that he’s out. There’s no way we could have moved the amount of snow we’ve had the past two years with our equipment,” he said. Hary recalled that in the winter of 2009 (and early 2010) there were three major storms that caused the snow removal services to exceed the $80,000 mark.
