The deadline for filing to run as a candidate for council or mayor in the May election was Thursday, March 19.

As expected, running for mayor this year are incumbent Shing-Fu Hsueh and challenger, Council President Charles Morgan. Morgan will run with Anupam Gupta and Nitin Shah, both of whom will run for the two open council seats in the May 12 election. Hsueh, who is seeking his third mayoral term, and Councilwoman Linda Geevers have teamed up with Kamal Khanna. Both teams filed petitions with the clerk’s office before the deadline.

Resident Pete Weale, who announced earlier this month that he would be collecting signatures for his own campaign for mayor, said he collected 176 signatures — more than the 166 he needed on the petition he filed — and filed with the township clerk’s office on the morning of March 19. The signatures are not yet certified, but Weale said he feels that those he collected are valid.

The News went to press before the 4 p.m. deadline.
