The Township Committee has approved the purchase of two Dodge Chargers and the one unmarked Ford Crown Victoria, for a total of $84,”421. Outgoing Chief Elizabeth Bondurant said the purchase is the last in the township’s five-year car replacement plan.

In 2009 a new succession plan to replace cars as they are needed will be created. “It’s a good way to budget for the future years so there is no surprise,” said Bondurant, explaining that the plan offsets the need, for example, to suddenly purchase six cars one year and zero cars the following.

The newer Dodge Chargers have better leg room, which accommodates two officers in the department who stand over 6-feet-5-inches tall, said Bondurant. Ford had redesigned the interior and created less room in the footwell, and the cage that is installed behind the police officers’ seats limits their ability to adjust, she said.
