While it’s hard to say yet who will be chosen to replace Joseph Stonaker, the long-time Plainsboro township attorney retiring in December, one law firm with ties to this area is a contender for the job. ##M:[more]##

One possible candidate is the firm of Herbert, Van Ness, Cayci and Goodell. When asked about the possibility, West Windsor Township Attorney Mike Herbert said “obviously we’re going to explore it, but I wouldn’t like to make any further comments.”

According to Plainsboro Township Administrator Robert Sheehan, Herbert’s Princeton-based firm, along with three others, have submitted proposals to provide the legal services. The deadline for submissions ended October 16.

Other proposals came from Eric. M. Bernstein and Associates of Warren; Gary M. Schwartz of East Brunswick; and Parker McCay, with a main office in Marlton and a branch in Lawrenceville.

Herbert said his firm currently provides legal services to three municipalities and seven land use boards in this area. Stonaker, he said, has been an outstanding lawyer and good friend.

Herbert has served as attorney in West Windsor for more than 10 years, but recently has not been smooth-sailing. He recently found himself under attack by Councilman Charles Morgan, who tried to have him removed from his position in July.

Morgan submitted a 14-page memorandum to the board questioning Herbert’s professionalism, partiality, and the accuracy of his legal advice. However, his fellow council members voted against him, and instead, approved a service agreement with Herbert’s firm in August.
