Girl Scout Cadette Troop 299 recently completed a year-long project that began with asking their classmates at Grover and Community middle schools to donate books for the Trenton Community Charter School Library. With an overwhelming response from the community, over 1,”500 quality children’s books were donated.

In addition to the book drives, the girls also organized the library, created a reading corner, and purchased a library rug and rocking chair. Pamela Garbini, one of the scout mothers, submitted a grant application offered by her employer, Bovis Lend Lease of West Windsor, and the company presented the troop with a $500 grant to help fund the larger purchases.

On March 2 the troop participated in a pajama party event in celebration of Read Across America week. They presented the library rug, rocker, and new Read Aloud books to the Trenton School. April Lowe, the director of the school, presented the troop with a plaque to thank them for their effort.

Girl Scout members include Sophie Hanstveit, Keighly Bradbrook, Aananditaa Kakkar, Grace Garbini, Cassie McClellan, Kay Hanley, Julie Hanley, Eva Kemp, and Arpita Aneja. Their leader is Carolyn Sellars.

“This experience has given the girls in the troop the realization that they can make a difference when they put their minds to it,” says Sellars. “It was also memorable to see how our community comes together for a good cause. Troop 299 extends its thanks to the many families that made this project such a huge success.”
