The annual benefit cabaret of the African American Parent Support Group goes retro this year, Saturday, April 17, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., at the Hightstown Firehouse. “The theme this year is ‘Old School Jam,’” says Yolande Zealy McCain, president of the group. “That’s oldies but goodies from the 60s, 70s, 80s.” A DJ will spin tunes on the dance floor, refreshments will be served, and door prizes include gift certificates from Wegman’s, SuperFresh in Plainsboro, and McCaffrey’s.

Now in its third year, the annual cabaret, which drew about 150 attendees last year, seeks to raise $2,”000 for the four scholarships the group awards to seniors — two at High School North and two at High School South. The Cheryl Larrier-Jermott scholarships are named after the former West Windsor school board president. “Recipients have to be accepted at college, and in addition to academic achievement, we also look for involvement in the African-American community, whether through church or through school,” says McCain. This year’s scholarships will be presented at Senior Awards Night — at High School North, June 8, 7:30 p.m.; at High School South, June 9, 7 p.m.

Retha Ellis, cafeteria manager at Maurice Hawk, who also has a catering business, will help cater the food for the event, which is BYOB. Tables for ten are set up in the firehouse hall and attendees are encouraged to come by themselves, as a couple, or with a group. Tickets are $30; $50 for a couple.

Organizing committee members include McCain, Arlene Banks, Angela Knight, Kim Evans, and Michael Reid.

Those who are interested in contributing to the scholarship fund without attending the cabaret may send a check made out to AAPSG to the organization’s mailing address, AAPSG, P.O. Box 654, Plainsboro 08536.
