Don’t Block the Box

The following is an open letter to West Windsor business administrator Marlena Schmid.

Traffic on the Penns Neck Circle is often paralyzed due to drivers ensuring that they, individually, don’t have to endure/wait for another traffic signal sequence.

In New York City there is a painted “box” with signage “Do Not Block the Box” so selfish drivers do not completely paralyze traffic. This protocol was necessary to keep traffic moving.

As the West Windsor Police Department Traffic Division will note, motorists who insist on blocking traffic impede traffic flow. There is currently nothing to suggest or preclude drivers from doing this unless they employ common sense.

Since the township is the representative with both the county (Route 571) and the state (U.S. Route 1), and whereas the Township employs a traffic consultant (Gary Davies), and West Windsor belongs to the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, the township is best positioned to solicit solutions to this challenge from the aforementioned entities. The Penns Neck Circle does work well but not as effectively when there is blockage.
