Trenton’s culinary scene, and the North Clinton Avenue commercial corridor, are welcoming another business: Restaurant 5Oh4, serving Jamaican food and soul food.
The new restaurant is located at 504 North Clinton Avenue, and will hold its grand opening event on Saturday, May 12 from noon to 6 p.m. A soft opening was held last week, introducing a limited menu to its eager customers and neighbors. The full menu will launch on Saturday.
Owner and chef Jacqueline Danvers has long been working toward opening her own restaurant. When her husband, Everton, found a long-abandoned property on Clinton Avenue and purchased it from the City at auction, she immediately saw the potential.
“I’m very happy to be here,” she said. “I see signs of improvement in the neighborhood, and I’m happy to be part of it.”
The restaurant features a takeout and sit-in area, as well as an event space in the back. Danvers is exploring the possibility of hosting live music events in the coming months.
Everton Danvers fully renovated the building, which had been abandoned for more than 20 years, in part with the assistance of a Storefront Improvement Grant from the East Trenton Collaborative, a group of nonprofits and resident activists working to revitalize the area. One of the key initiatives of the collaborative is the strengthening of the North Clinton Avenue commercial corridor by improving targeted properties and helping businesses to establish themselves. The new restaurant is adjacent to seven new residential units built by Habitat for Humanity, which are almost complete.
Trenton is becoming a “foodie” destination, included in a 2016 analysis of the “Top 10 Foodie Cities” in the US, and Danvers hopes that Restaurant 5Oh4 will appeal to a broad community in Trenton and beyond.
“There’s something delicious here for everyone,” she said. “Stop by on Saturday and see.”
