Mercer County Professional Counselors Association presented the 18th Annual Scholarship Awards at a breakfast reception at Mercer County Community College on May 31.

Three different scholarships were presented to eleven high school seniors.

The Caring for Humanity award is based on commitment to service in the community or at school. The Meeting the Challenge scholarship acknowledges the work of students overcoming an obstacle. The Many Languages One Ambition scholarship recognizes outstanding English as a Second Language students.

Counselors from public and parochial high schools in Mercer County, who are members of MCPCA, presented their students with certificates acknowledging the recipients’ accomplishments.

One recipient, as a member of Key Club, made peanut butter sandwiches monthly for the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and raised money for the Eliminate Project, which aims to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus in third world countries.

Two recipients spent a month in Israel on a teen mission painting houses, planting trees, and working in soup kitchens.

Another scholarship winner volunteered at Capital Health during all four years in high school.

Other agencies benefiting from recipients’ volunteer work include Relay for Life, dance benefit for Cystic Fibrosis and the Miracle League of Mercer County.

Many scholarship winners are members of National Honor Society.
