Students in the Upper School at Trenton Catholic Academy have started adorning their necks with bow ties.
From October to May, male Upper School students are required to wear neck ties. According to a TCA administrator, on any given day about half of the boys wear bow ties instead of the traditional straight tie with their uniform.
Many girls are also donning bow ties.
“I can’t remember the last time I wore a regular tie,” junior Quentin Freeman from Willingboro said. “Wearing a bow tie makes us stand out and shows others we care about our appearance. We get compliments, because the ties make us look more professional and polished.”
Bow ties emerged at TCA when class president and basketball player Frantz Massenat started sporting them three years ago. Massenat is now a junior at Drexel University.
Massenat’s trend started to take hold when professional athletes and celebrities were pictured wearing the accessory.
Upper School director Michele Neves said bow ties make the students standout.
“Whenever our students go out in public or attend functions with the alumni, people always comment on how well they present themselves,” Neves said, “In particular, the ones wearing a bow tie get noticed. It represents not only a style, but a mindset. They know that there is only one chance to make a first impression.”
TCA welcomes contributions of straight and bow ties for students who may need help completing their uniform. Individuals can donate ties at the school’s main office, 175 Leonard Ave., Hamilton or call (609) 586-3705.
