A new exercise routine in West Windsor is based on traditional Chinese medicine. Zifagong, also called spontaneous qigong, is practiced at West Windsor Community Park on Thursday and Saturday mornings from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Yu-Lien Yen is presenting a talk about it on Saturday, September 13, at West Windsor Library from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Yen, the owner of Sunny Garden Restaurant for 19 years, discovered the book, “Super Zifagong” by S.Z. Lin, soon after his retirement in 2006..##M:[more]##

Yen, who graduated from college in Taiwan with a degree in meteorology, received his master’s in mechanical engineering from Stonybrook University in New York. After working as a computer programmer for a New Jersey insurance company, he was hired by Bell Labs and returned to school for a master’s in computer science.

He and his wife, Yue-Ching, moved to West Windsor in 1989 “for the good schools.” Their son, Pong Yen, graduated from West Windsor-Plainsboro High School, Class of 1998, and their daughter, Angla Yen, graduated in 2002.

The couple opened Sunny Garden Restaurant in 1989 and moved and expanded to its current location in 1994. The couple’s plan was to retire, take it easy, and enjoy life when the youngest graduated from college. In 2006 they sold the restaurant.

Yen feels that Zifagong transformed his life back into a good state and that he is more relaxed and happier now.

“The practice lets your body develop the way to handle physical problems,” he says. “Everyone will have different movements.” Yen, who suggests keeping your eyes closed to prevent outside interference, will discuss the “custom designed program by yourself.” The talk, as well as the practices, are free.

“I’ve fulfilled my dreams,” he says. “Now I want to give back to people.” — Lynn Miller
