Miriam Li, a fourth grader at Millstone River School, started a project to plant trees around the world. After going from class to class to educate her classmates about how trees can help care for the earth and slow global warming, she began to fundraiser at the school last spring.
The Environmental Group, building on her Trees for the Future project, began in September with close to 15 students. After months of work through school based skits, educational announcements, and fund raisers with their own recycled crafts, the new environmental group raised close to $1,”000 for the Trees For the Future organization.
Through these funds, Millstone River School will adopt two villages in a developing country and fund the planting of trees in those villages. On March 11 Gorav Seth, the director of international programs for the Trees For the Future organization based in Washington, D.C., visited the school to receive the check, answer questions, share ideas, and discuss issues.
The group’s next project is assisting with the school-wide “Trash to Treasure” art show in April, encouraging students to turn trash into works of art.
