Plainsboro has been awarded a $475,000 grant from the state Department of Transportation to cover the costs of the first phase of its roadway improvements to Edgemere Avenue.

The grant is one of four grants for which township officials applied in June, 2008, to help fund various road and pedestrian improvements around the community.

At the time they applied for the money, township officials said Edgemere Avenue was deteriorating, and there had been some problems with the sewer systems on the roadway. Because of its length, it is going to be a costly project, and officials created two phases.

The improvements covered in the grant include roadway reconstruction, storm drainage work, curbing, and new sidewalks. The first phase of the project will focus on Edgemere between Maple Avenue and Pond View Drive West. The design and construction will be scheduled some time in 2010.
